Flatslander Guide Service offers several programs available to clubs and organizations interested in the sport of fly fishing.
We offer fly casting lessons for groups or private lessons for individuals.

"Midwest Big Game Fly Fishing"
- Techniques for Catching Carp, Catfish and Wipers in the Midwest." Trout anglers may spend their lives looking for a single 5 pound fish, but Midwest anglers have access to several species of fish that may average OVER 5 pounds. Learn techniques and tips for catching some of the best fighting fish in freshwater on a fly rod. "Just Add Salt"
- The basics of Saltwater Fly Fishing" This program covers the basics of saltwater fly fishing for the beginner or novice, focused on the Florida Keys. It covers the equipment you need to hit the salt flats, from rods and reels to wading boots and clothing. We discuss the fish you'll pursue; the "Big Three" of bonefish, permit and tarpon, as well as overlooked species like sharks, barracuda, jacks and anything else that will bite. Tides and their influence on the flats we fish is a vitally important piece of knowledge for saltwater anglers and we discuss tidal flow and which fishes best. If you plan to head to Florida, Belize or the Bahamas, or any other tropical fly fishing destination, this seminar will be a great primer for you. Much of the information is applicable to the Gulf Coast redfish and speckled trout fishery as well. "Build your own Furled Leaders"
- Furled leaders are becoming more popular all the time. But they can be costly if you buy them, or most require jigs or other tools if you want to build them yourself. We will demonstrate a method of constructing your own twisted (furled) leaders from ordinary monofilament fishing line and
the only tools needed are your two bare hands (no cumbersome jigs to set up or drills to use.) It only takes a couple of minutes to build one and you can make hundreds of leaders from a single spool of mono for just pennies each. - This program will provide you with information you need to go to one of the World’s premier flats fishing destinations – Belize – and fish on your own. We’ll tell you how to get there, where to stay, where to eat, and where to fish - for under $100 per day – without a guide. We’ll talk about specific techniques for the flats you can easily access by foot from your base hotel. Bring a notebook, you’ll want to write down this information we’ve gathered over several trips to Ambergris Caye. "Backyard Flats Training-Using Carp To Sharpen Saltwater Fly Fishing Skills"
- This program provides you with an introduction to the techniques needed to be successful on your first saltwater trip, or to brush up if you're just out of practice. It focuses on real world practice through shallow water fly fishing for carp. Carp will help you learn or enhance your flats fishing skills before you head south for bonefish, permit, redfish or tarpon. "A Fly Fisher's Primer on World Records"
- This program will briefly describe the work of the International Game Fish Association, the IGFA and their sport fishing record program. You will learn what records are kept and how to rig your gear to be complaint if you catch a record-class fish. We will also cover legal fishing methods and the "Do's" and "Don'ts" of seeking record fish. "Knots to Know-Basic Knots For All Types of Fly Fishing"
- Learn all the knots you'll ever need for rigging a fly rod and reel from tying the backing on to the reel arbor to attaching the fly and everything in between. You'll see diagrammed and demonstrated an arbor knot, nail knot, perfection loop, surgeon's knot and improved clinch knot, along with a few other basic knots. Then we will show you how to tie the unique and very interesting Bimini twist and other unique knots which are useful in many fly fishing applications. This is not just a demonstration, you will be provided cordage and string to tie the knots right along with us. If there is time, we will even take requests and tie other knots you may have heard about. "Kansas Fly Fishing"
- Yes, Toto, there is fly fishing in Kansas! While the Sunflower State isn't on the top of most anglers' list of places to go, perhaps it should be. We have large Corps of Engineers' reservoirs, moderately sized State Fishing Lakes and innumerable privately owned farm ponds and streams. Almost all of them afford the adventurous fly rod angler opportunities to fish. We may not have world famous trout streams in Kansas, but who needs trout when you have world record-class wipers and 10 pound carp to catch?
